Wells Fargo Unveils New Commercial Banking Structure

Wells Fargo revealed the new leadership team and regional structure for its Commercial Banking business, led by Kyle Hranicky, a 25-year company veteran.

Wells Fargo combined its Business Banking, Government & Institutional Banking and Middle Market Banking businesses to establish an integrated Commercial Banking business focused on operating more efficiently, reducing risk and better serving customers.

Under the new Commercial Banking organization, the following leaders report to Hranicky.

East Region is led by Kristin Lesher, a 20-year industry veteran. Based in Washington, D.C., Lesher oversees Commercial Banking operations across six divisions in 19 states as well as the District of Columbia and Eastern Canada. Previously, Lesher was co-head of Investment Banking Coverage, part of Corporate and Investment Banking.

Central Region is led by Laura Oberst, a 35-year industry veteran. Based in Minneapolis, Oberst oversees Commercial Banking operations across six divisions spanning 20 states. Previously, Oberst was head of Wells Fargo’s Business Banking Group.

West Region is led by John P. Manning, a 34-year industry veteran. Based in Irvine, CA, Manning oversees Commercial Banking operations across five divisions in nine states. Previously, Manning was head of Wells Fargo Middle Market Banking, East Region.

Chief Operating Office is led by David Pope, a 35-year industry veteran. Based in Charlotte, NC, Pope is responsible for leading strategic initiatives including market implementation, business initiative support, regional services and partner relationships. Previously, Pope was chief operating officer for Wells Fargo’s Business Banking Group.

Specialized Industries is led by Phil Smith, a 30-year industry veteran. Based in Charlotte, Smith oversees operations to deliver industry expertise and specialized capabilities across 48 states and Canada. Previously, Smith was head of Wells Fargo’s Government and Institutional Banking Group.

Monroe Expands Direct Originations Team with Seven New Hires

Monroe Capital has expanded its direct originations team with the addition of seven experienced investment professionals: David Fischer and Nick McDearis in the firm’s Atlanta office; Dan Letizia and Tommy Ryan in Chicago; and Jack Bernstein in New York.

The expanded Monroe Capital team includes:

Fischer, managing director, and McDearis, managing director, will co-lead the firm’s relationship sourcing and the origination of new business opportunities within the Southeast region. Both previously worked at AloStar Capital Finance.

Letizia, managing director, will be responsible for relationship sourcing and the origination of new business opportunities within the Midwest region. He previously worked at Twin Brook Capital Partners.

Ryan, managing director, will join the healthcare vertical with Group Head Matt Evans. He has more than 15 years of experience in middle market direct lending focused in healthcare. He previously worked at Twin Brook Capital Partners.

Bernstein, vice president, started with Monroe Capital in 2015 in an underwriting and portfolio management capacity and will join the firm’s origination team. He has more than six years of experience in the financial services industry. He previously worked at HIG Capital.

Encina Expands Business Development Team with New Hires



Encina Business Credit hired Dan deBrauwere and Steve Janson as business development officers.  deBrauwere previously served in senior leadership roles at PNC Business Credit, U.S. Bank, Bank of America Business Credit and CRG Partners. Janson joins Encina from MB Business Capital.

Wells Fargo Names Chrapaty Chief Technology Officer

Wells Fargo named Debra Chrapaty as its chief technology officer, making permanent a role she has held on an interim basis since May. She will continue reporting directly to Saul Van Beurden, head of Technology.

Two Veteran Bankers Launch Colony Small Biz Specialty Lending Group

Colony Bank has opened a Small Business Specialty Lending Group focusing on Small Business Administration lending and other government guaranteed loans. The newly created division will be based in metro Atlanta and will be led by two veteran bankers, Darren Davis and Stephen T. Kruto.

Tammaro, Sundal Join BMO Harris ABL Division

BMO Harris Bank’s Asset-Based Lending group has added Brian Tammaro as managing director and Scott Sundal as director. They will lead BMO’s coverage efforts in the Northeast and Southeast regions of the country for prospects, customers and private equity sponsors that utilize asset-based financing. 

BofA Capital Promotes Benefield to National Marketing Manager

Bank of America Capital promoted Seth Benefield to the position of national marketing manager. Benefield, a frequent participant in ABF Journal lender roundtables, will oversee a team of business development officers who provide asset-based solutions and banking products to large and middle market companies.

Alexander, Rosen Join Ares Alternative Credit/Financial Services Group

Kevin Alexander and Scott Rosen have joined Ares Management’s Credit Group to expand its focus on asset financing across alternative credit and the financial services industry. Alexander will lead investment origination and structuring of Specialty Assets within Ares’ Alternative Credit strategy. Rosen will help lead investment origination and structuring of investments in the financial services industry, including specialty finance, asset management and investment distribution.

Affolter Joins White Oak as Managing Director/Originations

Thomas (Tom) M. Affolter has joined White Oak as a managing director based in Chicago. He will focus on originating new investment opportunities and expanding the coverage network for White Oak’s private debt funds.

Mizuho Adds Panigrahi to Technology Practice

Mizuho Americas expanded its Equity Research Analyst group with the addition of Managing Director Siti Panigrahi to its software coverage team. Panigrahi brings 25 years of experience including more than 11 years in software equity research at Wells Fargo and Credit Suisse.

DeCero, Borrecco To Lead Combined Mechanics/Rabobank Bank

Following the strategic combination of Mechanics Bank and Rabobank, John DeCero, president and CEO of Mechanics Bank, and Mark Borrecco, CEO of Rabobank, will serve as co-CEOs of the new organization. DeCero and Borrecco will also become members of a newly created Office of the Chairman, which will chart the future direction of the combined bank.

J.P. Morgan Appoints Kresse Head of CCBSI International Banking

J.P. Morgan appointed Andrew Kresse as head of CCBSI International Banking, expanding its commercial banking business in the European and Asia-Pacific markets. A 24-year industry veteran, Kresse has extensive experience in J.P. Morgan’s corporate and investment bank, partnering across global investment banking, corporate banking, markets, commercial banking and business banking. He most recently served as CEO of Chase Business Banking.

Kaplan Joins CIT Northbridge to Lead Northeast Business Development

Elijah Kaplan joined CIT Northbridge Credit to lead its business development efforts across the Northeast. Based in New York, Kaplan has more than 19 years of experience in financing, acquiring and advising middle-market businesses on asset-based transactions across a wide array of industries.



Cross River Expands Team, Provides $70MM Facility to Idea Financial

Cross River added key new hires to its Capital Markets team from online lending and business banking company, Laurel Road, which was successfully acquired by KeyBank in April 2019. These include team leader Noah Cooper, who becomes Cross River’s SVP, head of Capital Markets, as well as Rahul Jha, Joshua Karlgaard and Ryan Callahan. They will focus on managing the bank’s balance sheet and secondary market activities including securitization and loan pool sales.

U.S. Bank Names Shade Arizona Market President

Joshua Shade has been named U.S. Bank’s Arizona market president. Shade will lead the market in company-wide efforts and activities and direct commercial banking in Arizona. He succeeds Brian Schwallie, who was promoted to head of Commercial Deposits & Payments Solutions.

Flowers to Lead Wells Fargo Strategic Execution & Operations Office

Wells Fargo formed a new Strategic Execution and Operations Office. Derek Flowers, a 21-year company veteran, will head the new department. Flowers is an executive officer, a member of the company’s Operating Committee and reports to Interim CEO and President Allen Parker.

Piper Jaffray Expands Healthcare Investment Banking Team

Piper Jaffray has hired Mihir Mantri and Paul Scansaroli as managing directors in its Investment Banking division. Mantri will join the healthcare investment banking group and advise life sciences companies. Scansaroli will join the equity capital markets group with a focus on high growth companies across the healthcare sector. Both will be based in the firm’s New York office.
